If You Really Must Know
The Short of It
Brock Stephen Henning has written for the inspirational market, with his latest works geared for readers of Children’s and Middle-Grade fiction. He’s a cybersecurity professional, musician, fly fisherman, video and board gamer, nature lover, endless reader, and film fan.
Brock lives in Colorado with his wife, Sarah, of 30 years. Together they raised three kids who love stories and adventures and all the cool things that children’s books inspired them to be.
The Comical
Who is Brock Henning, anyway? (As answered by my classmates and teachers in our 8th grade graduating class newsletter. Names have been changed to protect the guilty.)
TEACHERS WILL REMEMBER BROCK HENNING…
is a “Born” star.
WHAT WE’LL REMEMBER MOST ABOUT BROCK HENNING
his strangeness
WHAT IF BROCK HENNING…
moved to India and became the leader of a revolution?
IN 20 YEARS, BROCK HENNING WILL BE…
bait shop owner on the State Hospital grounds where he is a resident.
REMEMBER WHEN BROCK HENNING…
played with erasers and made weird noises?
I CONFESS… (as answered by myself)
to saying “bad” words with John on the teacher’s tape recorder.
MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT (as answered by myself)
I gave Julie a plastic ring in first grade, and she threw it across the room, in front of the entire class.
WHAT WE WILL (to an incoming 8th grader):
I, Brock Henning, will my great strength, intelligence, and awesome hair styles to Jack Doe.

If You Really Must Know
Eventually he stopped thinking, and he wrote.
I grew up in the southwest corner of Indiana…climbing trees, reaching into mudholes, digging for hidden treasure in my backyard, and adventuring for hours in the neighborhood woods.
Saturday mornings overflowed with cereal bowls, pop tarts, Mister Rogers, Sesame Street, Soul Train, and the wonderful lineup of cartoons.
I played clarinet, board games, card games, video games, role-playing games, and learned to write my own computer games in BASIC. I played baseball, basketball, soccer, and track. I believed in Santa Claus. The Easter Bunny. The Tooth Fairy. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. And scary things hiding in the dark. Still do.
At age nine I wrote, illustrated, printed and bound my first short story. Yep, clanked it out on a typewriter and hand-traced the character art. Even used a pair of scalloped scissors for edge flare. Only one copy was ever produced. A priceless treasure! You can read the original book here. The (Unofficial) Disney Christmas. Yours to enjoy for free!
I was part of the youngest of the last generation of computer pioneers, when the Internet was the ARPANET, Pong and the Atari 2600 ruled the console market, and my dad brought home our first family computer, a Commodore 64. That C64 opened an entire world for me, from publishing neighborhood newsletters with childhood friends to drawing digital art to connecting computers over telephone lines and communicating with people in other parts of the world. It was like discovering life in a galaxy far, far away. I cherish those days.
I’ve always been a reader first, as early as I can remember. A lover of stories in all forms, but especially the words on paper kind. I love libraries. Please support your local library!
It took me a long time to get back to the writing I loved as a child. Too much distraction. Too much growing up. But eventually you reach a point where you need to stop thinking (because you’ve done so much of that already, right?) and you need to start doing (because that thing you’ve buried screams to get out!). And if you don’t? You might think the rest of your life away.
So what are you waiting for? Get to it!
Thank you for stopping by my little digital house. I’m honored that you’re here. A neighbor can be anyone you meet at any time. I like to think this counts. =)
